The eye bars are to be 60 to 70feet long frorn centre to centre ofpins and in order to cut down theweight of the Jjridge the tensilestrength or pulling apart strain willbe aljout twice that of ordinary steelbut not higher than the best allo\-steels of today. The other prominent features ar.-the towers. In order to give themost economical sag to the chains th.towers have to be of great heigliland strength. Their bases are to b ■200 feet by 400 feet and their over allheight 800 feet above water level.They are to be founded on rock whichis from 100 to 200 feet below thewater. For economy and in order to reducethe area of the structure exposed todeterioration, each chord will be en-closed in an envelope of bronze,which will protect the painting fromthe elements and allow for properinspection.
