Everything was inkeeping—old engines, old fuel, old men.Presently the smoke began to come outof the big stacks that were needed in theday before such a thing as forced draftwas known. Presently there arose aclamor of bells and whistles and voices,till it seemed as if each of the fifty yearswere shouting history. At last all joints of men and machinerywere limbered. One by one the enginesmoved slowly out of the yards, the greatthree-hundred ton Mallet, which was tofinish the procession, going first.
