Summary
[edit]DescriptionBallard - Curtiss Block.jpg |
English: This massive triangular building at the corner of Leary Ave NW & 20th Ave NW was constructed in 1911 for the William M. Curtiss Hardware Company. Curtiss, one of the pioneer businessmen of Ballard, opened a tin shop on this site in 1889. The following year he built a 2-story addition and put in a stock of hardware. He soon became the leading hardware dealer in the city. He commissioned popular Seattle architect Victor W. Voorhees to design this building, which was originally envisioned to reach 5-stories tall. Curtiss passed away in 1927 and his company, in an ambitious move to expand, opened a branch store on Second Avenue in downtown Seattle in 1930 but were soon hit hard by the Great Depression, and were bankrupt by 1932. Their Ballard building was divided into apartments and the ground floor became a furniture store. It once featured large plate glass display windows on the lower floors before the building was converted entirely into apartments, sometime in the 1960s. |
