Summary
[edit]DescriptionBallard - Ballard Ave & Market Street Building.jpg |
English: This triangular building at Ballard's main intersection (Site address 2215 NW Market St), originally known as the Houlston Block, was constructed in several phases beginning with the shorter corner portion in 1903 by Reverend Thomas Houlston, who had purchased the lot in March 1901 from C.M. Claussen. McNamara & Son of Seattle were the original contractors. Houlston ran a book/music/candy/stationary store in the building's lower floor and rented rooms out above. The taller rear portion was added by Houlston in 1906 and was occupied by the H.A. Graham funeral parlor, and later a men's clothing store. Once featuring bay windows, in 1929 the entire façade was rebuilt with buff brick by architect Henry Bittman for the Bartell Drug Company who had recently moved into the building's corner space. In the 1930s it was known as the Apartment Hotel but also had numerous dentists offices upstairs. The corner storefront is currently occupied by Matador. |
