Title
balance arm
Description
English: Fragment of a cast copper alloy beam arm from a steelyard or balance. Both ends of the oval sectioned arm are missing. There are nine notches along the top of the arm each 10mm apart from each other, and along the same line there are five smaller notches, each 9mm apart. There is an incised 'X' on the side of the arm underneath one of the 10mm notches. There are three notches on the other side of the arm, however they are not regularly spaced, having a distance of 19mm and 23mm from each other.

This object was used in weighing and measuring. A pan would have been attached to the missing end of the beam, and a counterweight moved along the points of the graduated scale on the surviving end of the beam until equilibrium was achieved.
