Summary
[edit]DescriptionBagg-Maioli House, Buffalo, New York - 20210209.jpg |
English: The Bagg-Maioli House, 19 Allenhurst Road, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. Built in 1927, this wood-framed, brick-veneered Tudor Revival residence combines a series of most unusual design elements: a cross-gabled roof of round green tiles whose main gable practically envelops the second-story façade (with a slight opening to accommodate the window at right) as it slopes to cover an enclosed front porch, a fenestration pattern that emphasizes paired segmental-arched windows (and, in the case of said enclosed porch, a four-light window crowned with an even wider arch), and a side entrance. The centrally placed exterior chimney and the pair of quarter-round windows flanking it crib from the contemporaneously popular Craftsman Dutch style. This was originally the residence of Clara H. Bagg (1858-1949), the recently widowed wife of Charles M. Bagg (1855-1923), head of the Bagg Motor Company, a used car dealership situated near the north end of Buffalo's Main Street "Auto Row". Her stay in the house was short - the 1930 city directory shows that she'd moved to a suite in the Commodore Apartments on Delaware Avenue - but the same was not true of subsequent owner Paul Maioli (1886-1971), longtime steward of the Country Club of Buffalo, who lived there until c. 1948. |
