Summary
[edit]DescriptionBadshahi Masjid from Iqbal park at night.jpg |
English: Badshahi Mosque or the 'Emperor's Mosque', was built in 1673 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is one of the city's best known landmark, & a major tourist attraction representing the beauty & grandeur of the Mughal era, located at Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.
Facts 1. The Mosque has had the privilege to be known as the world largest for over 300 years. It is the 2nd largest in Pakistan & 7th largest in the world. 2. Design was inspired by its predecessor in Delhi “The Jami Masjid” built by Shah Jahan. Area is a perfect square measuring 170-meters on each side, courtyard is so huge that it can fit “The Great Taj Mahal”. 3. Since the fall of the Mughal empire, Mosque lost its status as a religious site. It was turned into a stable & military facility, building was severely damaged during the Sikh civil war. Guns were mounted as high as the mosque minarets. When British arrived they continued to use it as military storage & was never maintained until Pakistan’s creation. 4. Exterior is decorated with stone carving & marble inlay on red sandstone, Interior is richly embellished in Manbatkari or stucco tracery & a touch of fresco paneling in bold expression, which make it different from other mosques. Thats why it is called the ‘King of Mosques’. 5.Main Prayer Hall is more than 2100 sq meters in size, courtyard occupies nearly 26,000 sq meters. 6. Architecture is amazing, you will hear echo voice from one corner if someone spoke from the opposite direction, isn't amazing engineering. 7. Simply for its great size, it is visible from almost 10 miles. 8. Specs: Construction overseen by the Emperor's foster brother & Governor of Lahore, Muzaffar Hussein, also known by the name Fidai Khan Koka. Architectural style: Indian, Central Asian, Persian & #Islamic elements. Completed: 1673. Capacity 70,000-100,000 worshipers. Materials: Red sandstone, marble, Manbatkari or stucco tracery & Fresco paneling. |
