Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 270-390 mm; Weight: 140-250 g; Identification: The red squirrel is reddish-brown to gray-red and has black, lateral lines. The belly is white to gray; Habitat: Forests; Diet: Herbivore: pine seeds, acorns, beechnuts, tree seeds, berries, fungi; Reproduction: Red squirrels have one litter per year, with their breeding season occurring from February to March. Three to seven young are born in each litter and are weaned at 6-9 weeks of age; Social Structure: Territories for red squirrels range up to 1.5 hectares; Behavior: Red squirrels are diurnal. They do not hibernate; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The red squirrel is a wonderful reforestation agent because it often fails to go back and dig up its seeds and nuts that were stored for the winter. Only 25 percent of young red squirrels will survive to be one year old due to birds of prey or migrations away from the maternal home range.
