Title
BUCKLE
Description
English:

A copper alloy medieval single loop D-shaped buckle dating to c AD 1250-1500. The buckle frame is D shaped in cross-section with a wider outer edge on which there is an approximately central depression to hold the point of the pin or tongue. The frame narrows and is connected by a rectangular profile bar around which the pin or tongue is folded. The pin comprises a sheet of copper alloy which is folded around the bar, The pin narrows from 3.90mm in width, to its point, and is 15.20mm in length. It is D shaped in cross-section.

The buckle plate is sub-circular in plan at the front and consists of a sheet folded around the recessed pin bar with a rectangular cut to take the pin. Underneath, the plate is narrower, having been cut to the width of the pin bar, is rectangular in plan and it does not quite meet the end of the top part of the plate. A set of two rivet holes can be seen about midway along the plate. There are no rivets in place.

The buckle plate is 18.42mm in length including the lugs created to hold the pin bar, 19.29mm wide where there are knops at each edge to mirror the width of the pin bar. Part of the lower front of the plate has broken away at an early date.

The buckle frame is 21.17mm in width and 18.03mm in length. The hoop is 4.08mm thick at the outer edge where it is designed to take the point of the pin and 1.80mm at its narrowest. The whole item is 32.31mm in length overall. It weighs 4.97g. The patina is a sandy green overall. There is no decoration.
