Summary
[edit]DescriptionBOEM MARINe Fieldwork 44.jpg |
English: BOEM staff Lisa Gilbane, Susan Zaleski, and Abigail Ryder participated in annual MARINe (Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network) field work with University of California-Santa Cruz staff in December 2022 at Vandenburg Space Force Base.
MARINe was developed by a consortium of organizations to use long-term monitoring of rocky intertidal communities to observe species composition changes over time. BOEM and its partners on the west coast use rocky shore community metric data for evaluating oil spill impacts, water quality discharges, and adjacent Marine Protected Areas. In particular, BOEM has a specific continual need for black abalone count and size data as well as abalone habitat quality assessments for Endangered Species Act consultations. BOEM’s support for the MARINe program provides funding to monitor 32 rocky shore sites of interest to BOEM, of which 24 sites are adjacent to Outer Continental Shelf operations in California and eight sites are off the Oregon coast.
