BODKIN |
||
Description |
English: Description: The object is the end of a silver bodkin-type dress-pin with the remains of the slot and perforation (eye) at one end; when complete, this would have tapered to a point at the other end. The shaft has a flattened quadrangular cross-section with bevelled edges, and has an engraved design in the centre of both sides and a small fleur-de-lys trefoil terminating the object. Surviving length overall 27.5mm; maximum width 5.1mm; maximum thickness 2.7mm; weight 1.98g. Summary and conclusions: This type of object is now generally recognised as a bodkin of seventeenth-century date. Similar finds from have been made at Clavering, Essex (TAR 2004, no. 245), Chilcomb, Hampshire (TAR 2004, no. 246), Hougham, Kent (TAR 2004, no. 247), and Mattishall, Norfolk (TAR 2004, no. 248); Buckingham, Buckinghamshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 575), Ivinghoe area, Buckinghamshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 576), Newent, Gloucestershire (TAR 2006, no. 277), Redbourn, Hertfordshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 578) and Heckington, Lincolnshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 579). These have all been dated to the seventeenth century. A silver dress-pin of this type was found at St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, in 2011 (TreasureCase . 12.1). Bodkins of this type were popular in the Low Countries, and appear in household inventories as well as on female portraits (e.g. Baart et al 1977, 217-9, where they are dated to the early seventeenth century). Examples in Britain are not restricted to Norfolk and Suffolk, examples being reported from across England from Gloucestershire (TAR 2005-6, no. 577) up to Lincolnshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 579). |
