Français : Au début du 19e siècle, la France se dote d’établissements scolaires secondaires afin de forger l’unité morale de l’élite et, à travers elle, celle de la nation. Ces lycées dispensent une formation générale à des garçons qui formeront les cadres de l’administration, de l’armée et du gouvernement. La carte se veut didactique : l’illustration des montagnes les plus hautes, rassemblées comme un palmarès géographique, n’en rend cependant pas la lecture plus aisée. On note le point de vue centré sur l’Europe : le mont Blanc est le n° 1 dans la liste. La hiérarchie ne tient pas compte de la géographie physique : dans les faits, les 10 plus hauts sommets se trouvent en Asie centrale et en Amérique du Sud.
