Description |
Français : Longtemps perçues comme totalement dépourvues de vie, les grandes profondeurs océaniques ont commencé à faire l’objet de campagnes d’exploration au 19e siècle. Les décennies 1870 et 1880 sont déterminantes, avec l’expédition britannique du Challenger (1872-1876), première campagne océanographique autour du monde, et les campagnes françaises du Travailleur (1880) et du Talisman (1883). Ces deux dernières permettent de récolter après dragages des échantillons de vie animale jusqu’à plus de 5 000 m de profondeur, performance notoire pour l’époque. Présent à bord, le naturaliste Edmond Perrier fait la synthèse de ces travaux dans un ouvrage de vulgarisation scientifique, présentant ici quelques-uns des animaux étranges récoltés, parmi lesquels en bas à gauche une holothurie, ou « concombre de mer », représentative des échinodermes, dont le savant était spécialiste..- Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo |
