Français : Au 15e siècle, la redécouverte, par les humanistes européens, de la Géographie de Ptolémée révolutionne la représentation de l’espace terrestre. La projection conique mise au point par le savant grec, la grille de méridiens et de parallèles qu’il utilise, l’orientation au nord sont autant d’apports essentiels à la cartographie européenne moderne. La carte du monde de Ptolémée représente la quasi-totalité de l’Europe et de l’Asie – seules manquent les régions polaires et l’extrémité orientale du continent asiatique – ainsi que l’Afrique jusqu’à sa partie équatoriale. Par son aspect réaliste et sa prise en compte de l’ensemble de l’espace connu, elle rompt aussi bien avec les mappemondes médiévales inspirées du modèle T dans O qu’avec les portulans qui se limitaient le plus souvent à la représentation des territoires côtiers. Les nombreuses éditions imprimées de la Géographie lui assurèrent une large diffusion à partir de la fin du 15e siècle. Celle donnée par Gérard Mercator en 1578 se veut conforme aux intentions de Ptolémée. Elle prend toutefois en compte les connaissances nouvelles acquises par les Européens. Ainsi, la liaison que le géographe grec établissait entre le sud-est de l’Asie et l’Afrique, qui faisait donc de l’océan Indien une mer fermée à l’image de la Méditerranée, a disparu de la carte du monde. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo |
