Diagram showing breech mechanism of British BL 12 inch Mk VIII naval gun.

  • A : Bronze end plate, with handle at bottom for withdrawing, on toip is a recess for attachment of a cam lever if usual working fails.
  • C : Frame Breech Mechanism is a circular bronze plate attached to the breech face by 6 screws.
  • D : Bronze Ring carrier
  • E : Steel plate with inner face cut away to form an eccentric groove, called the roller path, on the side of which the friction roller of a crank acts to turn the breech screw.
  • F : Steel roller, assists moving obturator and screw from its seating.
  • G : Piston of the buffer
  • H : Upper part of Hinge bolt
  • I : Gun-metal bush
  • J : Friction roller
  • K : Bevel wheel
  • L : Lower part of Hinge bolt
  • M : Wheel bevel
  • N : Steel contact bolt
  • O : Steel rack pinion
  • P : Metal roller frame
  • Q : Bronze worm wheel
