English: The common clam ( Tridacna Maxima ), or giant clam, is a common species of coral reefs in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. It is eaten by many local populations in these oceans, and even farmed artisanally in places, particularly in certain atolls of the Tuamotu in Polynesia. During the day, it lets its thick, often very colorful (blue, green, purple, etc.) mantle stick out to ensure the photosynthesis of its symbiotic algae, which contribute to feeding it; it is however capable of retracting it very quickly and closing suddenly, breaking any object that could be between its two solid valves joined by an extremely powerful muscle. |
