Summary
[edit]DescriptionAylsham North railway station - geograph.org.uk - 1290567.jpg |
English: Aylsham North railway station. Aylsham North railway station was a station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line which linked the Midlands with the Norfolk Coast. Opened by the Eastern and Midlands Railway, it became a Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway station, converted to a joint operation of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the London and North Eastern Railway taking sole operation in 1936. The station was finally closed in 1959 and demolished shortly afterwards. Nothing remains of the station building and the area where it once stood is very overgrown (at left). This view was taken from under the bridge carrying Church Road. Part of the site of the former goods yard now serves as a car park for the Weavers Way long distance footpath. The only surviving building is the goods shed > 1290527 which is located on the edge of the Aylsham Industrial Estate, on the other side of Banningham Road.
Aylsham North is not to be confused with Aylsham South railway station which was in operation from 1880 to 1981. It was opened by the East Norfolk Railway and consequently run by the Great Eastern Railway and forming part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. In 1948 the station passed on to the Eastern Region of British Railways. The passenger service stopped in 1952 but the freight service continued until 1977. When the station was taken over by the narrow-gauge Bure Valley Railway in 1990, the station - by then one of the most complete remaining Great Eastern stations in Norfolk - was torn down to make way for the construction of the headquarters of the Bure Valley Railway > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/761149 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/761162. |
