Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n PS.61. Built 1963, retired 1984. A genuine Falklands veteran (see below) she is on display at the National Museum of Flight (part of National Museums Scotland). East Fortune Airfield, East Lothian, Scotland. 13th September 2017

From the adjacent sign board:-

“Vulcan XM597 is on her way back to Ascension Island from a missile strike when trouble strikes. While re-fuelling from a Victor tanker aircraft, she fractures a fuel probe. Short of fuel and in serious difficulty, the Vulcan diverts to a Brazilian airfield. The pilot manages a remarkable landing on the short stretch of runway. The aeroplane is immediately seized by the Brazilian authorities and the crew is stranded for seven days. XM597 is eventually released on condition that she takes no further part in hostilities.

This is the actual aircraft that was stopped in Brazil. This aeroplane was one of only two V-bombers ever to fly in combat. During the Falklands War, she was used to attack Argentine radar systems around Port Stanley in an operation known as ‘Black Buck’. Painted on the nose is a Brazilian flag, a memento of her unscheduled stop-over.”
