A close up of the wreckage of Cody aircraft mark VIA. Cody and his passenger W H B Evans, captain of the Hampshire Cricket Club, were both thrown out of the aircraft from about 300 feet when the accident happened and died on impact with the ground. The reason for the crash given in the inquest was inherent structural weakness of the aircraft. This however was debatable Cody was aware of the dangers of aircraft disintegration and purposely built his aircraft both large and strong. Many, including Cody's son Leon (who, if it had not been for Cody taking Evans for a flight would have been in the aircraft himself), believed that the propeller had burst (broken) and had fatally damaged the aircraft's wing or tail spar. Another, highly plausible, theory, given by the engineer Paul Chapman in a 1998 lecture to the Royal Aeronautical Society commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of Cody’s first flight, suggested that the tendency for bamboo to expand and crack in hot weather, might have caused the aircraft to break up as there was a heat wave at the time of the fatal crash.

This was both the last and the largest of Cody's aircraft and was intended to take part in the Daily Mail Coastal Circuit of Britain contest. This competition was to begin in August 1913 from Calshot near Southampton following the south and east coast to Inverness down the Caledonian canal to the west coast, across the Irish sea to Dublin, round Land's End to Falmouth and then returning to Southampton all to be done within 72 hours.

The aircraft was again a biplane with a single frontal elevator and a single triangular rudder with horizontal appendage held on two spars so as to accommodate the large four bladed propeller in a pusher Configuration.

Cody made numerous flights in the aircraft fitted with the conventional undercarriage including a demonstration for the army of the aircraft as an ambulance plane. Despite the aircraft's size the 100 hp Green engine meant it was relatively fast and handled well with Cody confident that he could win the race for which there were only three other entries.
