Statue de Bouddha prenant la Terre à témoin placée au sein d'une galerie du Bayon La statue du Bouddha est entourée de deux représentations dorées de l'arbre de l'Eveil. Comme temple d’État, le Bayon était au centre d'Angkor Thom, la capitale du royaume khmer. C'est un temple "œcuménique " qui associe l'hindouisme (les dieux Shiva et Vishnu y sont largement présents) et le bouddhisme car le Roi était lui-même bouddhiste du grand véhicule : Mahâyâna. Le Roi et la famille royale étaient représentés dans le Bayon sous forme de bouddhas dans les chapelles entourant la grande tour centrale. |
