Deutsch: Für eine präzise Wettervorhersage und verbesserte Klimamodelle ist entscheidend, die Winde über dem Nordatlantik möglichst exakt zu erfassen. Wissenschaftler des DLR haben den Prototypen eines Wind-Lidar (light detection and ranging) entwickelt, der ab Ende 2016 auf einem ESA-Wettersatelliten zum Einsatz kommen soll.
Zur Erprobung wird diese Lasertechnik zur Windvermessung im Mai 2015 von Wissenschaftlern des DLR und der NASA über Island und Grönland mit Hilfe der Forschungsflugzeuge DLR-Falcon und NASA-DC-8 getestet. Die Kalibrierung der Messtechnik ist ein wichtiger Schritt zur ESA-Mission ADM-Aeolus (Atmospheric Dynamics Mission).
