Description

Atumashi Monastery

In 1857,during the King Mindon's time, a monastery was built which was uniqued and there is nothing to compare with it at a cost of five million Rupees. It is deviated from acient typical monastery because five graduated flat-roofed terraces was fixed on it instead of the customary seven spires and supported with 264 teak pillars. It was built with the flexible mixture of wood and stucco. It had been designed and supervised by a court minister ShwePyaiWungyi, U Shwe Oe, the first architect of Myanmar. Moreover, the influence of European style architecture can be seen than the Myanmar's architecture. There is a Buddha statue cast in bronze donated by King Mindon inside the monastery. King Mindon incinerated silk clothes of his father, King Tharyarwathi and added while the statue was casting. A 32 carats diamond was submerged on the forehead of the bronze statue. But it was stolen on the night of Mandalay annexation in 1885. Atumashi monastery had been used as a library and a learning center for monks. By the year 1890, the monastery brunt down and reconstructed in 1995.
