Lepisosteus atrox Leidy, 1873 - fossil fish (real) from the Eocene of Wyoming, USA. (UW 16435, University of Wyoming Museum, Laramie, Wyoming, USA) From museum signage: Colossal Gar It's a big fish. In fact, it's the biggest fish ever collected from the famous Green River fossil beds near Kemmerer, Wyoming. This giant 55-million-year-old alligator gar probably ambushed ducks for lunch! Gars lived with dinosaurs during the Cretaceous Period and they still swim in rivers throughout the Midwest today. And they still have needle-sharp teeth. Lepisosteus atrox actual fossil specimen Courtesy of the Wyoming Geological Survey and the University of Wyoming Museum. Specimen collected and prepared by Western Paleontological Laboratories, Incorporated. UW 16435 Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Osteichthyes, Actinopterygii, Holostei, Lepisosteiformes, Lepisosteidae Stratigraphy: Green River Formation, upper Wasatchian Stage (Wa4)/Ypresian Stage/Lostcabinian, Lower Eocene Locality: fossil quarry west of the town of Kemmerer, Fossil Lake Basin, southwestern Wyoming, USA |
