Phases of a Superior Planet. — Mars is the onlyone of the superior planets that has appreciable phases.At quadrature, as will appear from Fig. 151, Mars does notpresent quite the same side to the earth as to the sun :hence, near these parts of its orbit, the planet appears slightlygibbous.
