Description Native, cool season, perennial, erect to decumbent herb which can be somewhat woody at the base. There are male and female plants. Stems are mostly to 20 cm long, usually much-branched and with sparse, short, recurved hairs. Leaves and stipules are in whorls of 5 or 6, linear and 2–8 mm long; apex is acute to shortly acuminate usually with a short point; margins and midrib are more or less scabrous. Flowerheads are terminal or in the uppermost axils and 1–3-flowered. Flowers are unisexual, 4-petalled, white and 2–3 mm long. Styles are 2-fid. Stamens 4. Fruit are 3–4 mm long, deeply lobed, black-brown. Flowering is in spring and summer. Grows in woodland, forest and grassland, common and widespread.
