Summary
[edit]DescriptionAsian Garden 6850 (49856529408).jpg |
The Asian Garden at UNC Charlotte seeks to bring about a fusion of garden cultures: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and American. Asian Gardens are an expression of ancient beliefs about the nature of the world and the human place in this world. They use stone, water and vegetation to represent the interaction of the two basic forces in the universe, yin and yang, which are experienced in many dualities of life such as darkness and light, female and male, softness and hardness, earth and heaven. These forces are not seen as conflicting, but as complementary and in harmony. In the garden, yin and yang are most often seen in the magical interplay of mountains (rocks) and waters (either real or implied). This project was made possible by gifts from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust and the Arts and Science Council. Text by Dr Jeffrey Meyer, Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus. Dedicated April 11, 2010. HFC_6850 |
