English: The Asian Barred Owlet, also known as the Cuckoo owlet, is a pygmy owl species native to the forests and shrublands spanning mainland Southeast Asia to the foothills of the Himalayas in northern Pakistan. Despite its classification as a pygmy owl, it measures between 22 to 25 centimeters, placing it among the larger members of its genus.

This medium-sized, stout owl is frequently observed during daylight hours, perched conspicuously on exposed spots such as telephone wires. Its plumage is predominantly brown with barred underparts, distinguishing it from the similar Collared Owlet. Unlike the latter, the Asian Barred Owlet lacks false eye spots on the back of its head, exhibits darker brown barring on the sides, and boasts a larger stature.

The vocalization of the Asian Barred Owlet consists of a long series of mellow toots, primarily heard at night. However, its presence during the day can often be detected by the mobbing behavior of songbirds. This species occupies a diverse array of wooded habitats, including expansive parks and gardens.
