Notes | Colonial Ammunition Company ashtray, WW2 The Colonial Ammunition Company (CAC) was founded by Major John Whitney (1836 - 1932), who arrived in NZ at the end of 1884, the time of the Russian war scare. Faced with a shortage of ammunition at home and little prospect of new supplies from England, Whitney, with the encouragement of the government, established CAC in Mt Eden in 1885 to manufacture small arms ammunition. During WW2 the manufacture of .303 ammunition was relocated to Hamilton. Two factories were constructed in Hamilton East, and flats were built to accommodate the women employed in the factories. Staff and operations were transferred during 1942. Following the war the Hamilton operation was closed and production continued in the Auckland factory in Mt. Eden. These ashtrays were produced by the factory to commemorate the victory and were kept as souvenirs by many of the wartime employees. For more information see- Harris, L.H.
