English: Alaska’s Bogoslof Volcano sprang to life in December 2016 with a series of explosions and rising ash plumes. Nearly a half-year later, the restless volcano continues to rumble and pour ash into the air intermittently. As the volcanic ash rises into the atmosphere it is blown by the wind hundreds of kilometers from the source. Since Bogoslof Island sits in a remote location – halfway down the Aleutian Island chain – most of the ash falls into the surrounding water.
On May 28. a major volcanic eruption was reported by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, with ash reaching an altitude of at least 35,000 feet (10.7 km) and possibly higher. Two additional explosive events occurred on June 1 and June 5. Both of those events were shorter in duration and ash plumes did not reach as high as the May 28 event. Ash plumes from all three explosive events were reported to be carried primarily to the north or northwest over the Bering Sea. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the erupting volcano on June 6, 2017. Bogoslof Island sits in the south of the image and upper slopes of the volcano are blanketed with snow. Black ash covers the summit and the northeastern slope. A faint ash plume may be rising over the volcano. The bright green swirls which color the blue waters of the Bering Sea north of the island are caused by volcanic ash which has fallen into the water. |
