Description

Exhibited at the 2nd Fiera Nazionale d’Arte Antica e di Pittura dell’800, in Cremona in 1938, this painting entered the Cariplo Collection in 1957. It shows a woman in peasant dress carrying a hen along a calle, which is probably in Chioggia since its buildings, along with a bridge on the right, are discernible in the background.

The painter was in the habit of going to Chioggia and Venice as from 1879, finding there, like other painters of Lombard Naturalism such as Leonardo Bazzaro, inspiration for landscapes and lively scenes of local life, both of which enjoyed considerable success with the public and critics alike.

The work was executed on a primed canvas where the gesso ground is visible. This, combined with the rapid handling, dates the work to around the last decade of the 19th century. During this period the artist reprised some of his favourite themes, evoking once again the characters and views of the lagoon that he had studied so many times on his visits to the Veneto. Moreover, a fascination with popular life characterises not only the Chioggia scenes enlivened by boatmen, fishermen and wayfarers, but also those set in the uplands of Verbano or nearby Brianza, such as Farmstead (Piacenza, Galleria d’Arte Moderna Ricci Oddi [1]) in which there are always young peasant girls going about their daily tasks.
