Description
English: Haig in Chantilly, France, December 1915. This photograph, which has a French press stamp, shows Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) walking down a road from his car past a line of French soldiers. At the beginning of the war, French infantry wore red trousers with a dark grey/blue overcoat with an upright collar. In the spring of 1915 these began to be replaced by less visible horizon-blue uniforms, the new greatcoats having lapels like those on the coats worn by these soldiers.

Haig was probably arriving at the Second Inter-Allied Conference which took place in Chantilly in December 1917. Its aim was to find ways in which the separate armies could co-ordinate better.
