Summary
[edit]DescriptionArms DabernonOfBradfordDevon AsQuarteredByDennis OfHolcombeBurnell.svg |
English: Arms of Dabernon "of Devon": Argent, a cross moline and on a chief azure three estoiles or (Colby, Rev. Frederick T., The Heraldry of Exeter, Archaeological Journal, Volume 30, 1873, p.236[1]). This blazon implies cross moline and chief of tincture azure (Argent, a cross moline azure on a chief of the second three estoiles or). As quartered by Dennis of Holcombe Burnell and Bicton, Devon, and by their heir Rolle of Bicton, as seen on the monument to Denys Rolle (d.1638) in Bicton Old Church (now the Rolle Mausoleum), where the cross moline is shown more as a cross cercelée. However it is known that the Dennis family inherited the manor of Bradford, Devon by marriage to the heiress of Dabernon (which brought the quartering of Giffard), so these must therefore be the arms of Dabernon "of Bradford", which however are given differently by Pole as Azure, a chevron or, as for D'Abernon of Stoke D'Abernon in Surrey (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.479). The arms of Dabernon "of Devon" are given similarly with a cross moline, but sable not azure as seen at Bicton, by Burke's General Armory, 1884; by Thomas Robson, The British Herald; and by William Berry, Encyclopaedia Heraldica. |
