Description
Français : Armoiries (imaginaires) de Charlemagne d'après le jésuite Marc Gilbert de Varennes dans Le roy d'armes, donne d'autres armoiries imaginaires à Charlemagne. Il écrit que « Charlemagne Roy de France et Empereur d'Occident portoit d'azur, à un aigle éployé d'or, diadémé, langué, & armé de gueules, l'estomach chargé de l'escu de France, qui estoit d'azur, aux fleurs de lis sans nombre, d'or : & telles armes furent portées par les empereurs François ses descendants, iusques à ce que ceux de la maison de Saxe usurpèrent l'Empire sur les François, car alors ils changèrent les émaux anciens de l'Empire, & prirent le métal, & la couleur des armes de leur Othon, surnommé le grand, qui portoit selon sa naissance, fascé d'or, & de sable de six pièces, blasonnant les armes de l'Empire, d'or & de sable, armé, lampassé, & couronné d'un diadème de gueules. » On suppose que c'est en partie de ce blasonnement donné pour Charlemagne que Napoléon s'inspira pour définir les armoiries de l'Empire Français dans le décret du 21 messidor An XII (10 juillet 1804)
