L'Arco fu consacrato ad Augusto dal Senato romano nel 27 a. C. ed è il più antico arco romano rimasto, segnava la fine della via Flaminia e l'inizio del decumano massimo, oggi Corso di Augusto , Una particolarità di questo arco è che il fornice era troppo grande per ospitare una porta,infatti la politica della pax Augustea rendeva inutile una porta civica, non essendoci il pericolo di venire attaccati
