But-ler, wrote as follows in his paper onSome Relations between Vegetableand Human Pathology published inthe London Lancet (Jan. 21, 1922,p. 160): The first is tumour formation in plants asexhibited by the well-known crown-gall tumourcaused by Bacterium tumcfaciens. I haverecently had an opportunity of discussing withDr. Erwin F. Smilli, of Washington, this dis-ease, which he has been studying for the lasteighteen years. His work is regarded byplant pathologists throughout the world as ofgreat value. The tumours caused are usuallyhyperplasia, arising from the repealed division of the cells to produce a solid small-celledlumour tissue without cavities.
