ects and City Planners Daniel S. llalliday. C. E. Both are right. But they should movetheir viewpoints closer together and acquirea composite view of the picture. The land-scape architect feels that he is taught toview things differently than is the engineer—although there is nothing at all to pre-vent an engineer from having the landscapemans angle of approach. For example, insubdivision work, he tackles his problemwith the desire to obtain the ultimate inbeauty, livability and spaciousness. His plan But he does not eliminate the engineer. The engineer is his right hand man andthey must solve their problems together. Itis a fifty-fifty, hand-in-hand proposition.Every subdivision plan that was ever madein our office has had its engineer. And notone of them ever complained on the groundthat we took work away from him. Alloriginal topography, field work, gradesetting, staking, actual running of profiles, estimated cuts and fills and maps of record 72 AR.CHITECT AND ENGINEER. April, l530
Text Appearing After Image:
PLAXTINC, FRONT OF ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, MIDWICK VIEW ESTATES, MONTEREY PARKCook, Hall and Cornell, Landscape Architects and City Planners are handled by the engineer. What morecould an engineer ask? The landscape architect determines thegeneral plan of design and road treatment, which he studies over the engineers to-pography. He locates open or recreationspaces, school sites, public building sitesand any other features; he determinesstreet locations, curvatures, important gradepoints, cross sections and planting, but helets the engineer do the work. They haveno conflict. They work together. The day has come for a high degree ofspecialization within all the professions. The architect specializes in domestic, busi-ness and commercial architecture. Thereare many different kinds of engineers, eachone schooled in his special chosen branchof activity. The landscape architect may de-vote his chief attention to private estate work, to park design or to city planning andsubdivision design.
