Arbelos: (van Grieks: arbelos = schoenmakersmes):
Vlakke figuur, begrensd door drie halve cirkels mat middellijnen
AB, AC, CB (C tussen A en B) en aan dezelfde kant van de rechte AB
gelegen (zie afbeelding).
De figuur is het eerst beschreven door Archimedes en de vorm doet
denken aan een schoenmakersmes. Enkele merkwaardige eigenschappen
van deze figuur zijn:
1. de omtrek van de arbelos is gelijk aan de omtrek van de cirkel
   met middellijn AB.
2. de oppervlakte van de arbelos is gelijk aan die van de cirkel
   met middellijn CD, waarbij D het snijpunt is van de loodlijn in
   C op AB met de halve cirkel op AB.
3. zijn P en Q de raakpunten van de gemeenschappelijke raaklijn
   aan de beide halve cirkels op AC en CB, dan vormen P, Q, C en D
   de hoekpunten van een rechthoek.
4. de punten A, P en D liggen op en rechte, evenals de punten B,
   Q en D.
