[edit]

English: The whare nui Tūhuru, on Arahura Marae, north of Hokitika on the West Coast of New Zealand. The marae is the spiritual home of the Ngāti Waewae people, and opened in 2014. Tūhura Kōkare was a Ngāti Waewae warrior chief who defeated the Ngāti Wairangi, conquered the West Coast, and established a new pā at Māwhera. The carved posts and tekoteko depict the story of the of the abduction of Waitaiki by the taniwha Poutini, who turned her into pounamu (greenstone).
