Summary
[edit]DescriptionApproaching Blea Moor tunnel - geograph.org.uk - 1719112.jpg |
English: Approaching Blea Moor tunnel. A diesel-hauled train on the Leeds-Carlisle service approaches the tunnel at Blea Moor. For a more recent view of the same scene see 156679; it will be seen that the semaphore signal in this view is no longer present.
The black heaps on the moor beyond are the spoil heaps, close to former construction shafts, from when the tunnel was excavated in the 1870s. That they have never become covered with vegetation suggests the presence of toxins such as lead, which was extensively mined in nearby areas. For a close-up of one of the spoil heaps see 209083 and one of the shafts see 162742. |
