Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The statue was discovered in Rome in 1850 near the villa Ludovisi. It is a roman copy of the Aphrodite of Cnidus, created by Praxiteles in the second quarter of the fourth century BC. The original, exhibited in the temple of the goddess at Cnidus (present-day Turkey), is the first divine statue of a full female nude. The goddess was represented standing, naked, putting down her garment with her left hand and hiding her pubis with her right. This copy probably had a decorative function; perhaps it was erected in the Gardens of Salluste in Rome, if one can trust its place of discovery. The statue is now in the Musée d'art et d'histoire of Geneva (MAH).
