nd converted a barn which stood onthe ground into a meeting-house. This was in 1729, and thishumble edifice served them for a place of worship until 1744 ; al-though, in the mean time, two small additions in the shape ofwings were added to it. In the year last mentioned, a substantialand convenient church was built, after the; fashion of the churchesof that time (as represented by the engraving annexed), and withthat old church there is much of interest associated. It was with-in its walls that delegates met in convention to decide whetherMassachusetts should accept of the Federal Constitution proposedfor the United States : and it was here that it was finally accepted,on the seventh of February, 1788. It was owing to this circum-stance that the name of Long Lane was changed to that of Federalstreet. The old or second house was of wood, the tower fronting onFederal street. This was succeeded by a Gothic structure, whichwas completed, on the site of the old one, in the course of 180!i.

FEDERAL STREET CHURCH. ANTIQUE VIEWS OF BOSTON. The Rev. Daniel Annan was the next Pastor after Mr. Moorhead.He was installed in 1783, and was dismissed at his own request,by the Presbytery, in 1786, and was afterward settled over a churchin Philadelphia. In the period succeeding the death of Mr. Moor-head and the settlement of Mr. Annan, occurred the war of theRevolution, during which regular preaching was intertupted. Afterthe evacuation of the town by the British, in March, 1776, theRev. Andrew Croswell was employed to preach to the society. In1787, Dr. Jeremy Belknap was installed over this church, he hav-ing taken a dismission from a parish in Dover, New Hampshire,for that purpose. He was an eminent scholar and historian. Be-fore the settlement of this gentleman, but not at his instance, orwith any view of inviting him in particular, the society which hadbecome reduced to a small number had relinquished the Presby-terian regimen and embraced the Congregational oider, with a ten-d
