A person in ascendingthe hill will plunge into a wilderness, where, in sonic instances,progress is forbidden by beetling cliffs and thorny thickets. Thereis not a more desirable spot in Boston for a natural park than thishistoric hill, or where a park can be made for so little expense.From time immemorial it has been used by the people for a picnicground, and it should be reserved for this purpose before it isbuilt on and it becomes too late, as would then be the case. The Dorchester people have a tradition that Capt. John Smithlanded here while exploring the New England coast. Historiansdiffer on this subject. It has never been definitely settled thatSmith entered Boston harbor, or did more than to discover itsentrance, which he named Charles River, supposing it to be ariver. The view of the hill from the north-east is taken from CalfPasture, and shows the hill as it appears at the present time,1882.

The artist has reproduced in this sketch a veneiable structure,which enjoys the peculiar distinction of being the only buildingstanding within the municipality of Boston that was ever attackedby any hostile Indians. This building is situated on Chickataubutstreet, Neponset, Dorchester, which territory as far South as theNeponset River was annexed to Boston a few. years ago. Nearthis spot on this beautiful river was the dwelling places of theMassachusetts tribe of Indians, over which Chickataubut heldundisputed sway before the arrival of the pale-faces on his coast.The building has occupied this spot for more than two centuriesbeginning with the time when Boston and New York were sea-coast villages. It was probably built about 1640, and is the oldestbuilding in this part of the country. In July 1675, the house wasoccupied by the family of John Minot.
