on of £4G6 13s.1/.. to Mose> Deshon and others, members of St. Andrews Lodgeof Freemasons. Since this date the estate has been in the posses-sion of the Lodge, from whom was obtained this engraving ot theold building. The old tavern stood on the left side of the street, formerlycalled Green Dragon Lane, now the northerly portion of Unionsi reel, leading from Hanover street to the old mill-pond, now filledup and built upon. It was built of brick, and in its latter dayswas painted of a dingy color. In front it showed only two storiesand an attic; but in the rear, from the slope of the land and thepeculiar shape of the roof, three stories, with a basement, wereperceptible. It covered a piece of land fifty feet in front andthirty-four in depth, and had connected with it a large stable andother outbuildings. In recent times the lower story was used as the common roojnsof a tavern, while in the second, on the street front, was a largehall used for public as well as for Masonic purposes.

The attic story afforded ample accommodations for sleepingapartments. .The chimneys were substantially built in the sidewalls, and were of the usual style found in houses built at the closeof the seventeenth century. The attic windows on the front part of the roof, and the walkrailed in on the upper part, added much to the appearance andcomfort of the building, which, in its best days, must have beencommodious, and comfortably arranged. In front of the building there projected from the wall an ironcrane, upon which was couched a Green Dragon. This peculiarmark of designation was very ancient, perhaps as old as the build-ing itself. It was formed of thick sheet copper, and had a curledtail; and from its mouth projected a fearful looking tongue, thewonder of all the boys who dwelt in the neighborhood. Whenthe building was taken down, this curious relic of the handiworkof the ancient mechanics of the town disappeared, and has neversince been found, although
