Text Appearing Before Image:
itish were advancing with gleaming bayonets, rolling drumsand measured tread. It was useless to attempt resistance there, and so the provincials at once retired to a hill beyond the river, about a mile to the north, in order to watch the enemy and waitfor re-enforcements. Meanwhile the kings troops marched intoConcord in two columns, the infantry coming over the hill fromwhich the Americans had letired, and the grenadiers and marinesfollowing the high road. On reaching the court house, ColonelSmith ordered six companies (about two hundred men), underCapt. Parsons, to hold the bridges and destroy certain stores on theother side. With the balance of his command he remained in thecenter of the town, destroying such things as he could lay handson The real loss, however, proved to be but slight. Aboutsixty barrels of flour were emptied, half of which was afterwardssaved ; three cannon had their Jrunnions knocked off; sixteen newcarriage-wheels and a few barrels of wooden trenchers and spoons

Thepresent Unitarian church is constructed of the old timbers, althoughthe appearance is materially changed. The old Wright tavern, inthe center of the picture, remains in good condition to the presenttime. PLATE III. Represents the engagement at the North Bridge. Capt. Parsons, who had been sent out by Col. Smith with a detachment of lightinfantry, posted Capt. Laurie with three companies at the bridge, while he proceeded to Colonel Barretts house in search of stores. The Americans had gathered on the high ground, west of thebridge, and now numbered about four hundred and fifty men, rep-resenting many of the neighboring towns.
