Plancock also gavea bell, on which was inscribed V to the Church the living callAnd to the grave summon all. This was the church of Colman, the Coopers, Thatcher, Buck-minster, Edward Everett, Palfrey and Lothrop, an array of cleri-cal talent unsurpassed in the Boston pulpit. Nevertheless, the night before the evacuation a twenty-four pound shot fromCambridge struck the tower, and falling to the ground was pickedup by Mr. Turell, and in 1824 was imbeded in the masonry, whereit remained until the work of demolition began. Even underthese oppressive laws, the Jesuit priests entered New England, from Canada, and established missions among the Indians on theKennebeck and Penobscot rivers. The most prominent amongthese early missionaries was Sebastian Pale. The reverence of theFrench and Indians for him occasioned the bitter hatred of thePuritans, and a reward was offered for his head. Captain Hiltonwas sent against him at Norid^ewock and the village reduced to aheap of ruins. Again, in 1724, the village was attacked and de-stroyed during the absence of the braves, and the heroic missionarywas riddled with small shot and hacked to pieces.
