Description
Italiano: Antico altare della Madonna della Salve, XVIII secolo. Sul paliotto: quattro grandi volute rese con forte evidenza plastica, incornicianti una cartella bombata con iscrizione. I risvolti ai lati della mensa: definiti da volute con margini modellati ad onde. Alle estremità del secondo gradino soprastante la mensa: due testine di cherubi. Tabernacolo: affiancato da due elementi a colonnine con capitello corinzio in lamina di bronzo e coronata da fastigio. Porticina del tabernacolo: bassorilievo con pellicano entro volute, sotto il quale è ritagliata una finestrella sagomata incorniciante una carta con scritta.
Proveniente dalla cattedrale antica, demolita per decreto napoleonico del 1803, l'altare apparteneva alla Cappella della Beata Vergine della Salve. L'identificazione è resa possibile dall'iscrizione apposta al centro del paliotto; conferma si trova inoltre nell' Inventario del 1840 in cui è menzione dell'altare "già della Salve in marmo nero" nella cappella di San Luigi: dal 1810 anno dell'inaugurazione della nuova Cattedrale al 1874 intitolata a San Luigi Gonzaga, la cappella fu dedicata al Rosario nel 1878 a conclusione dei restauri di Edoardo Arborio Mella (1874 - 1878).
