Title
annular buckle
Description
English: Complete cast copper alloy buckle of early Medieval date. The pin has an open loop and is 40mm long and 3mm in diameter. there is a rectangular knop on the upper surface. The ring has an outer diameter of 36mm, is circular in section and is 3mm thick.

Annular objects of this type are often recorded as brooches, rather than buckles. This particular object is recorded as a buckle, following the rule communicated by Dr. Geoff Egan, who suggested that although not a rule than can be followed 100% of the time, buckles generally tend to have a pin with an open loop which moves freely around the frame, whereas a brooch has a pin which is fixed in place by a narrowing of the frame.
