the 2()0-foot level had an assay value of $32.00 over a stoping widthof 63 inches. The early development was on No. 2 vein, the first work being an open cut.from which the first shipments of high-grade ore to smelters were made. Anincline shaft (A) was then sunk on the vein, which has a dip of 55° south, and themain ore shoot developed on four levels. The workings that started in conglom-erate passed into porphyry and the high-grade character of the ore was maintained. In drifting westward on different levels the vein was found to be faulted by a basicdike a few feet in width that strikes N. 20° W., and dips nearly vertically. Withinthe dike there are heavy fault planes. The dike was encountered 295 feet west ofthe shaft on the 200-foot level. The extension of the vein on the west side of thefault has not been determined definitely; one theory is that No. 1 vein, ex^josedon the surface 340 feet south of No. 2 vein, is the faulted portion of No. 2 vein. 1920 Kirkland Lake Gold Area 39

Tough-Oakes mine, No. 3 vein, as exposed on the east side of the shaft between depthsof 1 and 67 feet. The vein is in the porphyry, the fractured character of whichis shown in the illustration. 40 Department of Mines No. 4 High-grade ore in No. 2 vein was cut off abruptly against the dilce, consequentlythe solving of the fault problem is of great importance to the mine. The dike isknown to have displayed a strong east and west fault, dipping 87° S. on the Burn-side to tjb,e south,!a,distance of only about 8 feet horizontally; while No. 11 vein, witha dip oFSQ S. on the Tough-Oakes 180 feet north of No. 2, has been apparently COARSE CRUSHING Run of Mine Ore //i Ton Skip Scales Crusher Sta.
