te; smallseams of asbestos also are found. There is also serpentine on an island between thenickel deposit and the large mass of serpentine just referred to. The relative ageof the serpentine rock is not definitely known, but it is assumed to be younger thanthe Keewatin schists, since there are dike-like masses of serpentine apparentlycutting the Keewatin. The age relation of the serpentine to the granite was notworked out, since the two rocks were not observed in contact. Granite The granite which intrudes the Keewatin at the nickel deposit is of consider-able extent—several square miles. Along the contact between the Keewatin schist Geol. Sur. Diabase Dilces Medium-grained diabase dikes occur in the area, tlie age of which was notdetermined, whether Keweenawan or older. Nature and Extent of Ore Body The ore body is found in Koewatin schists, near the contact between the schistsand granite. The deposit occurs from 50 to 60 feet away from the granite.Although there is much drift, the pits and trenches show that the ore outcrops hereand there for a- distance of a mile. Tt has not been shown how continuous thedeposit is betAveen the pits. The width of the ore body varies from one to thirtv-five feet or more. The ore consists mainly of iron pyrites, together with copper pyrites andsmaller quantities of pyrrhotite. It carries variable percentages of nickel, copperand cobalt, as shown by the assays given on the following pages. A sample, fo
