Title |
Anglo Saxon gold and garnet pendant |
||
Description |
English: Early medieval Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet pendant, complete.
Gold pendant with ribbed attachment loop, with a large, sub-oval cabochon garnet with abraded surface, set inside a plain, squeezed frame which is broken in one place. The back is plain. Length 20.0mm, width 15.1mm, thickness across centre 4.1mm, width of loop 4.3mm, internal diameter of loop 1.8mm, weight 2.49g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the pendant indicated a gold content of 62-67%, a silver content of 31-33% and at least 2% copper. The red gem was identified by Raman spectroscopy as garnet. |
